NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Mel Goldstein, a popular and folksy weather forecaster on Connecticut's WTNH-TV, has died of multiple myeloma. He was 66.
WTNH in New Haven said Goldstein, who was known as "Dr. Mel," died Wednesday.
A WTNH biography says Goldstein's career in broadcasting began with one radio station that grew to dozens nationwide by 1976. He switched to television in the 1980s and became chief meteorologist at WTNH in 1986.
He earned a Ph.D. in meteorology from New York University and wrote "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Weather." Profits from this book are donated to cancer research.
Goldstein taught at Western Connecticut State University, where he developed the Weather Center and established Connecticut's only bachelor's degree program in meteorology.
He retired from WTNH in October 2011.
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
