Round two: The New London Community Orchestra, which began a year ago, stages its second concert on Sunday. About 25 string musicians will be led by conductor Joan Winters, who is principal second violinist for the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. She co-founded the New London Community Orchestra with Tom Clark, who runs the London-based Clark Instruments.
Hear hear! On the program are a series of musical delights: Vivaldi's Concerto in G Major, Bach's Fugue in G Minor, Satie's Gymnopedie #1, and Mozart's Divertimento No. 1.
Mission possible: One of the group's goals is to bring classical music to the community. Beyond that, too, the musicians aim to mentor New London schoolchildren in free string instrument lessons - and they're raising funds, including via concerts like this, toward that end. They hope to begin those lessons next fall.
