Westbrook - In a match between two programs who expect to challenge for the Class S state wrestling title next month, the Westbrook/Old Saybrook cooperative team won six of the first seven matches and held on to beat Griswold, 38-26, in a non-conference match Wednesday night.
The two teams finished 1-2 on Saturday in Griswold's Mid-Season Invitational tournament, and the reigning state champion Wolverines came up short again on Wednesday.
W/OS built an early 25-6 lead - Griswold's lone points coming on a pin by reigning New England titlist Brandon Walsh at 138 pounds - and clinched the victory when the Wolverines (7-4) forfeited at 106, giving W/OS an insurmountable 38-17 lead.
Jermaine Frazer (220) had Griswold's only other pin while Aaron Wing (182) won by technical fall, Dylan Martel (113) received a forfeit win and Zach Cassidy (120) earned a 3-2 decision in the final match of the night.
In other matches:
• Ledyard had six pins and rolled to a 50-15 win over NFA in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division.
Josh Lawrence (220), Ben Morallis (285), Devon Marcaurele (106), Mike Graff (120), Brandon Finney (138) and Dallas Smith (182) had pins for Ledyard (15-1, 4-0), ranked fifth in the Norwich Bulletin coaches' state poll. NFA is 12-9, 2-2.
• Montville rode six pins to a 56-22 win over New London in an ECC Small Division match.
Tommy Wynosky (106), Joe Rainville (113), Kyle Looney (132), Nick Bellerose (138), Pat Bogan (160) and Devin Bedard (182) had pins for the Indians (13-3, 4-1).
Matt Baird (220) had a pin for New London (2-4, 0-4), which also got wins by technical fall from Nick Rasmussen (152) and Juan Cruz (195) and a major decision from Sri Louis (145).
• Waterford had six pins en route to a 45-23 win over Killingly in a nonleague match. Brian Roscover (113), Matt Strollo (126), Spencer Sgandurra (138), Collin McCarthy (152), Chris Leffert (170) and Matt Tulba (182) had pins and Brentt Smith, Jimm Roscover and Shane Manley also won matches for Waterford (10-6).
• Five pins helped lift Bacon Academy to a 47-21 win over East Lyme in an ECC Large Division match. Ben Fowler (182), Tommy Scott (195), P.J. Sawicki (220), Dan Deloredo (285) and Irvin Vazquez (113) had pins for Bacon (8-6, 5-0). East Lyme (3-8, 1-3) got pins from Kareem Small (106) and Jake Kalleher (160).
• Fitch picked up its first ECC Large Division win, beating Woodstock Academy 41-31. Andrew Nirandone (126), Connor Doyle (195) and Lorenzo Hernandez (220) had pins for Fitch (4-16, 1-3).
College wrestling
• Coast Guard lost to host Southern Maine 46-3 and got beat by Trinity 28-12. Mark Howard won 8-4 at 197 pounds in the match against Southern Maine.
H.S. hockey
• Zach White and Craig Wargo had a goal and an assist each to lead the Milford co-op team to a 2-1 win over St. Bernard-NFA-Bacon. Cameron Morrone scored, Andrew Gagnon had an assist and Jonah Beauton made 28 saves for St. Bernard (4-5).
Men's basketball
• St. Thomas More rode Ky Howard's triple-double to a 107-66 win over Putnam Science Academy.
Howard finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists while New London's Torin Childs-Harris added 16 points and six rebounds, Rodney Sanders had 11 points and seven rebounds, Barrington Stevens scored 20 points, A.J. English added 14 and Chier Ajou finished with 12. T-More is 15-3.
• Babson beat Coast Guard 96-81 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game, sending the Bears to their sixth straight loss. Kevin Sowers had 20 points, David Anderson scored 19, Greg Marshall scored 18 and John Benedict had 12 points and eight rebounds for Coast Guard (6-9, 0-5). Marcus McDermott led Babson (9-8, 2-3) with 21 points.
Women's basketball
• Leslie Leong scored 18 points to lead Wellesley to a 61-39 win over Coast Guard in a NEWMAC game. Larla Brown score eight points and Victoria Gurtler had seven rebounds for Coast Guard (5-8, 1-8).
H.S. swimming
• Evan Opsahl won the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.84) and was part of two winning relay teams as East Lyme posted a 103-70 non-conference win over Williams School.
Opsahl joined Adam Opsahl, Will Clement and Ryan Godin to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.50) and teamed with Adam Opsahl, Ryan Rubino and Andrew Rubino to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:59.54). The Vikings are 6-1. Caius Mergy won the 200 IM (2:13.11) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.53) for Williams.
