The Jan. 15 headline "East Lyme about to lose a 'Town Treasure'" was true, but for those of us who have had contact, help, or guidance from Esther Williams, we will never lose those memories. I can truly speak from firsthand experience as I got to know her. When I first moved to Niantic, I was overwhelmed with the amount of documents that had to be notarized because of a state change of address. At one point Ms. Williams suggested that I contact an attorney to make sure I understood exactly what I was signing. Greatest advice at the time.
We truly became friends, her advice and suggestions always a gift, including how I could get involved in the town. Her advice was simple; she explained that Paul Formica was running for election and said, "Go volunteer." At her urging, my husband and I also got involved in activities at the Senior Center.
I continued to work on Mr. Formica's subsequent campaigns. This year I was placed on the ballot for the Planning Commission, and won.
On the day of the swearing in ceremony I said "I can't believe this is where I am." Ms. Williams simple reminder was, "You asked!"
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
