Springfield, Mass. - Coast Guard's Nate Giorgio continued his strong freshman season with three wins Sunday as the Bears went 1-2 in the New England Wrestling Association Dual Meet Championships at Springfield College.
Giorgio, a 125-pounder, won his match against Wesleyan 13-1 and recorded a pin against Norwich University in 1-minute, 5-seconds. He also moved up to 133 pounds to win an 18-1 decision against Plymouth State.
Coast Guard beat Norwich 28-22, lost to Plymouth State 29-8 and lost to Wesleyan 40-7. Mark Howard (197) and Colin Schuster (157) won two matches each for Coast Guard.
Men's hockey
• Zachary Lombardi's third-period goal snapped a tie and lifted Trinity to a 3-2 win over Conn College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Sean Murray and Keith Veronesi had goals, J.J. McGregor, Mike Doyle, Curran and Kevin Reich had assists and Marcus Calvanico made 29 saves for Conn (4-10-2, 2-7-1).
Calvanico made 41 saves Saturday night as Conn College tied Wesleyan 3-3 in a NESCAC game. Curran had a goal and an assist, Mike Martinez and Mike Sinsigalli had goals and Adam Patel, McGregor, Veroniesi and Julien Boutete had assists for Conn.
H.S. boys' swimming
• Andrew Clark won a pair of events Friday, leading Waterford to a 101-73 win over NFA in an Eastern Connecticut conference meet. Clark won the 200-meters in 2:29.24 and the 400 freestyle in 5:19.55. Michael McDermott, Justin Dobush, Zach Tyropolis and Jamison Fielder also won events for Waterford (1-4, 1-3).
Aidan Karam won twice for NFA, taking the 50 freestyle in 27.22 and the 100 backstroke in 1:11.14. Preston Spicer of NFA (2-5, 2-5) won the 100 freestyle.
Men's indoor track
• Fredrick Hewitt of New London, a sophomore at Eastern Connecticut State, won the 200 meters Saturday at the Wesleyan Invitational. Hewitt, a former Ledyard High standout, won with a time of 23.20 which qualified him for the New England Division III meet.
Women's swimming
• Sophomore Julia Pielock won three events Saturday, leading No. 21 Conn College to a 168-123 win over Wesleyan in a NESCAC meet. She won the 50-yard freestyle (24.52), 100 freestyle (54.27) and the 200 freestyle (1:57.19).
Esther Mehesz won the 500 freestyle (5:16.78) and 1000 freestyle (10:42.46). Other winners were Katie Karlson (100 backstroke, 1:07.96), Ellie Huelbig (200 butterfly, 2:12.99), Erika Fernandes (100 butterfly, 1:01.66), Rachel Bohn (200 IM, 2:14.91) and Molly Longstreth (3-meter diving, 135.75 points).
• Caitlyn Gever, Heidi Gayman and Sarah Cantrell won two events each Saturday to help lead Coast Guard to a 157-131 win over Kings Point. Gever won the 50 freestyle (25.64) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.26), Gayman won the 200 freestyle (1:59.22) and 500 freestyle (5:24.05) and Cantrell won the 1-meter diving (178.85 points) and 3-meter diving (205.7).
Also winning events for Coast Guard were Cathy Flocken (1000 freestyle, 11:16.15), Sarah Jane Otey (100 freestyle, 56.37), Chantel Ferguson (100 butterfly, 1:01.84) and Darlene Soto (200 IM, 2:17.69).
Men's swimming
• Tim Walsh, Kirk Czelewicz, Sam Gill and Max Fabian of Conn College two two events each Saturday as No. 25 Conn College beat Wesleyan 177-87 in a NESCAC meet.
Walsh won the 100 backtroke (52.28) and 200 backstroke (1:55.39), Czelewicz won the 200 IM (2:03.25) and 200 breaststroke (2:16.13), Gill won the 100 freestyle (47.52) and the 100 butterfly (51.66) and Fabian won the 500 freestyle (4:48.77) and the 1000 freestyle (10:02.98).
• Johnson Knox and Orlando Morel each won two events Saturday to lead Coast Guard to a 187-108 win over Kings Point. Knox won the 100 breaststroke in 69.94 and the 50 freestyle in 21.90 and Morel won the 1-meter diving with 235.5 points and the 3-meter diving with 188.45.
Marco Tinari (1000 freestyle, 9:55.23) and Brian McGuiness (100 freestyle, 48.01) also won events for Coast Guard (8-2).
