Old Lymes Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA) is on track to further erode relationships with our beach communities over policies involving sewerage systems. One by one the Incorporated Beach Communities are forming legal authorities that remove all jurisdiction of the town to develop a sewer avoidance plan in the beach communities leaving these communities to develop their own plans. To date Point o Woods Beach Association have installed a Municipal Sewerage System by hooking into New London's sewerage treatment plant, Old Lyme Shores and Old Colony Beach Associations are considering similar plans. As additional beach communities become frustrated with the towns WPCA they will follow suit.
One must ask why the Town of Old Saybrook with similar beach communities and similar sewer issue have developed a workable sewer solution acceptable to their beach communities? Their success was based on leadership by their town officials to bring all communities together to understand the issue and appoint WPCA members capable of developing a plan that was acceptable to all. These factors have been missing in Old Lyme.
On an optimistic note I do believe that our new first selectwoman understands the need to become more engaged in this issue. I encourage all property owners to closely follow this developing issue.
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
