Local roundup: Pointers to induct three with MLB ties

Groton - Three local major leaguers will be inducted in the UConn-Avery Point Baseball Hall of Fame on February 3.

East Lyme High School products John McDonald and Pete Walker and New London High School graduate Rajai Davis will be honored at a banquet at the Branford house on campus.

Walker, currently the bullpen coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, pitched at Avery Point in 1998. He was 11-6 with a 2.42 earned run average. He played at UConn from 1989-90 and was selected by the New York Mets in the seventh round of the 1990 draft. He went on to pitch in the majors for the Mets, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies and Blue Jays.

McDonald is an infielder with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He played at Avery Point in 1993-94, and was a NJCAA All-American selection in '94. He went on to play at Providence College from 1995-96 and was drafted in the 11th round by the Cleveland Indians in 1996. He played in the majors for the Indians, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays and Diamondbacks.

Davis was a Pointer from 2000-2001 and holds the school record for runs scored in a season (64) and a career (117). He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 38th round of the 2001 draft. The outfielder currently plays for the Blue Jays and has also played in the majors for the Pirates, San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics.

In addition, Myles Halliwell will be given the Service Award. He's been the statistician and announcer since 2006.

H.S. wrestling

• Windham recorded five pins and beat Montville 42-27 to stay undefeated in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division at 4-0. John Rodgers (145 pounds) and Devin Bedard (182) had pins for Montville (13-5, 4-2) and Kyler Fricke (120), Nick Bellerose (138) and Jake Schmalz (152) also won their matches for the Indians.

H.S. girls' basketball

• Nikki Strizzi scored 21 points as Old Lyme avenged an early-season loss with a 54-30 win over Westbrook in a Shoreline Conference game. Hannah Behringer had nine points and nine rebounds and Lyla Stanland scored 10 for Old Lyme (4-11, 3-10), which made 15 of 19 free throws.

College football

• Coast Guard Academy placed 18 student-athletes on the 2011 New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Academic team, including seven seniors who were named for the third straight season: defensive linemen Bobby Costolo and Paul Hahn-Rauch, linebackers Kieron McCarthy and Nick Peters, offensive lineman Chris Shivock, wide receiver Stephen Spotts and running back Ryan Webster. In addition, senior defensive lineman Nathan White made the team for the second straight year.

Juniors making the team for the second straight year were linebackers Parker Bateson, Jeb Slick and Nathan Turner, defensive lineman Ben Hinchman, offensive lineman Mike Rauch and defensive back Justin Dougherty while junior center Jed Daleiden made it for the first time. Three sophomores were also selected: Offensive lineman Thomas Bondurant, defensive back Brandon Foy and wide receiver Nick Fredericksen.

College basketball

• Paul Jefferson had 15 points and Joshua Ford had eight points and a season-high 19 rebounds in Mitchell College's 73-67 loss to Lesley in the New England Collegiate Conference. Jeff Gomez of New London added nine points and 12 rebounds for the Mariners (5-11, 3-7).

H.S. squash

• Williams School dropped a 7-1 decision to Suffield Academy on Wednesday. Sophomore Jack Shannon won at No. 1 for Williams.

H.S. hockey

• Peter Gonski, assisted by Keegan Twomey, scored the lone goal for Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard in an 8-1 loss to Masuk of Monroe on Wednesday night.

H.S. swimming

• Adam Collins (50 and 100 freestyles), Marissa Lynch (200 IM and 100 butterfly) and Andrea Goldstein (200 and 500 freestyles) were double winners in Willams' 104-56 win over New York Military Academy on Wednesday at Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y. Cattie Beggins (100 backstroke) added a win for the Blues.
