Colleges: Coast Guard swim coach notches a pair of wins; Amherst ices Conn College

New London - Coast Guard Academy swimming coach John Westkott earned his 150th career win Saturday, as both the men and women beat Clark on Senior Day.

Westkott has 102 wins on the men's side and 48 with the women's team.

The men won 133-92, as the Bears improved 9-2 overall. The 400 freestyle relay team of Christian Brindamour, Johnson Knox, Brian McGuiness and Dan Beshoar broke the pool record with a time of 3 minutes, 8.92 seconds.

Orlando Morel won diving on both the 1-meter board (241.10) and the 3-meter board (218.10), while Nick Poehler won the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.29) and Kevin Smit won the 200 freestyle (1:46.97). Other Coast Guard individual winners were Knox, 50 freestyle (21.51); Tanner Armstrong, 200 IM (2:01.33); Evin Moses, 200 butterfly (2:04.66); and Beshoar, 100 freestyle (48.53).

The women won 134-108 to climb to 5-7. Freshman Sara Cantrell broke the school record in 3-meter diving with a score of 247.5. Heidi Gayman won the 100 freestyle (55.65) and 200 freestyle (1:59.15), while Sarah Jane Otey won the 500 freestyle (5:34.13) and the 1,000 freestyle (11:12.96).

Other Coast Guard winners: Caitlyn Gever, 50 freestyle (25.54); Chantel Ferguson, 200 IM (2:18.42); Terri Jozsa, 200 breaststroke (2:34.37); and the 200 medley relay team of Gever, Jozsa, Jordan Mestemaker and Darlene Sao, 1:57.02.

In other meets:

• The Conn College men's and women's swimming teams celebrated Senior Day, both earning their sixth straight wins in a dual meet against Keene State College.

The 21st-ranked Camel women (7-3) won 175-113, while the men (8-2) won 147-144 .

In men's action, Kirk Czelewicz won the 100 and 200 breaststroke, as well as the 200 individual medley. Sam Gill won the 50 and 100 free. Tim Walsh took first in the 200 backstroke and Sean Paquette won the 100 backstroke.

For the women, Julia Pielock won the 100 and 200 freestyle, Esther Mehesz took first in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle and Molly Longstreth won the 1- and 3-meter diving. Other Conn individual winners: Ellie Huelbig, 200 butterfly; Erika Fernandes, 50 freestyle; Rachel Bohn, 200 backstroke.

Men's basketball

• Barrington Stevens had 14 points to lead St. Thomas More to a 58-53 win over Bridgton Academy in the championship game of Bridgton's Wolverine Classic. A.J. English had 12 points and six rebounds and Rodney Sanders scored 10 for St. Thomas More (20-3).

• Sixth-ranked MIT scored the game's first 10 points and rolled to an 80-55 win over Coast Guard in the NEWMAC. David Anderson had 12 points and Greg Marshall added 10 points for the Bears (7-10, 1-6) who shot just 30.5 percent.

• Mitchell College fell short in its comeback bid against Wheelock College, losing 70-63 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Sophomore Joshua Ford had 17 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Mariners (5-12, 3-8).

• Sophomore Mason Lopez had 17 points in Conn College's 61-57 loss to Wesleyan University in the NESCAC. Matt Vadas and Tyrone Turner each added 10 points for the Camels (6-13, 0-7).

Women's basketball

• Sophomore Kaitlin Ward had 14 points and Brittney Zimmerman added 13 in Coast Guard's 84-59 loss to Clark in the NEWMAC. Freshman Jamie Waterman had six points and nine rebounds for the Bears (5-11, 1-11).

• Wesleyan University defeated Conn College for the 14th time in 15 meetings, posting a 51-43 in the NESCAC. Tara Gabelman had 13 points and seven rebounds and Jenn Shinall had 10 points for the Camels (14-4, 4-3).

• Freshman Sheanna James led all scorers with 21 points and added 11 rebounds and a season-high seven steals, but Mitchell lost to Wheelock College 61-50 in the NECC. Kaylee Cerruto had 13 points and three assists for the Mariners (5-11, 4-6).

Men's hockey

• Conn College and Williams College played to a 3-3 tie in a NESCAC game. Mike Doyle, J.J. McGregor and J.C. Cangelosi had goals, Marcus Calvanico made 31 saves and Sean Curran, Mike Sinsigalli, Keith Veronesi and Kevin Reich had assists for Conn (5-10-3).

Women's hockey

• Amherst College led 2-0 after two periods and held on to beat Conn College 2-1 in a NESCAC game. Jillian Dolliff scored, Ariel DiPasquale and Andrea McRae had assists and Kelsie Fralick made 41 saves for Conn (8-7-2, 5-6-1).

Indoor track

• Kevin O'Brien took first in the 3,000 meters in 9:26.11 and Trevor Siperek won the mile (4:30.37) to pace the Bears in the Coast Guard Winter Invitational.

Westfield State won the team title with 109 points, followed by Coast Guard (80), Eastern Connecticut State (37) and Trinity (20).

Coast Guard's 4x400 relay team of Joe Kelly, Ryan Hub, Rian Bareuther and Ben Hannon won in 3:39.59 and the 4x800 team of Jordan Lee, Myles McCarthy, Siperek and Brad Pienta also took first (8:34.98).

In the women's competition, Coast Guard freshman Beth Gollin was a double-winner, finishing first in the 800 (2:26.49) and the mile (5:20.32). The Bears placed second with 77.5 points, trailing winner Westfield State (93.5).

Emily Trudeau set a school record with a winning shot put throw of 39 feet, 1.25 inches. Sophomore Abby Bishop won the 55 hurdles (9.32) and long jump (15-4 3/4) and Kristen Euchler took first in the 600 (1:45.94).

• Conn College's Alex Mavrovic set a school record in the 5K, qualifying for New England Division III, Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the All-New England Championship with a time of 14:45.67, competing in the Terrier Classic at Boston University.

In the 500 meters, Ian Rathkey of Old Lyme qualified for both the ECAC and New England Division III Championships with a time of 1:07.00. Junior Dan Smoot set a school record in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.71 seconds.

In the women's competition, Sara Gildersleeve set a school record with a time of 26.66 in the 200 meters and qualified for the New England Division III and ECAC Championships. Junior Sarah Matthews also qualified by finishing the 500 meters in 1:20.45. Samantha Pevear set a personal record in the weight throw, covering a distance of 38 feet.
