Bestech Environmental Services uses a claw excavator Monday to demolish the former Student Services building at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus in Groton. Demolition of the student center had been scheduled for last August but was halted when asbestos was discovered in the exterior walls. The building was then wrapped in plastic to contain the asbestos until it could be removed. The demolition is part of a $6.8 million construction project that includes a new 5,000-square-foot student center and the renovation of a 3,000-square-foot theater to meet fire codes.
