New London - The U.S. Coast Guard International Ice Patrol opened the 2012 ice season Tuesday. The New London-based unit took responsibility from the Canadian Ice Service for issuing daily iceberg analysis products under the North American Ice Service, the collaboration with the Canadian Ice Service and the U.S. National Ice Center. Early this month the patrol will deploy the first ice reconnaissance of the season to Newfoundland for initial assessment and to meet with Canadian partners. The survey of the iceberg population will determine the outlook for the 2012 ice season, which typically runs through July. This April is the centennial anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. The ice patrol was established by an international convention as a result of the sinking.
