H.S. basketball: New London boys clinch at least a share for ECC Large Divsion title

Groton - New London High School clinched at least a share of the Eastern Connecticut Large Division boys' basketball title with a 90-61 victory over Fitch on Tuesday night.

The fourth-ranked Whalers (12-2, 7-0) won their seventh straight game and can clinch the title outright with a victory over East Lyme on Thursday night at home.

Kris Dunn scored 28 points to lead New London while Keith Porter added 20 and Voghens Larrieux 11.

Fitch (5-11, 0-7) was led by Chad Graham, who finished with 24 points, assists and four steals, while Jamel Annibillini-Winston had 10 points and Riley Pyzalski had 10 rebounds.

In other games:

• Irving Eggleston scored 22 points as East Lyme won its fourth straight, beating Bacon Academy 54-41 in an ECC Large Division game. Wade McNamara had 10 points and Ben Shaw blocked six shots for East Lyme (8-7, 3-4), which held Bacon to six points in each the first and third quarters. Zak Miazga had 16 points and Tim Willauer scored 11 for Bacon (8-7, 4-3).

• Sophomore Darnay Gray scored 28 points and had 11 rebounds, leading Ledyard to an 84-71 win over Windham in an ECC Medium Division game. Thomas Whipple scored 18, Nakai Northup had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Khary Childs scored 14 for Ledyard (11-4, 3-4).

• Pete Aldrich had 27 points and 13 rebounds as he led St. Bernard to a 66-57 win over Lyman Memorial in an ECC Small Division game. Izzy Davila scored 17 points with seven rebounds and Brian Harper had 14 points for St. Bernard (7-9, 4-3). Chris Gonnelli scored 21 with 10 rebounds, Ajay Gonnelli had 12 points and Keith Chamberlain scored 11 for Lyman (2-11, 2-5).

• Zach Wood scored 20 points to lead Griswold to a 72-44 win over Wheeler in an ECC Small Divison game. Nick Lagace scored 15 and Tim Martineck had 10 points for Griswold (5-8, 5-2). Chris Fowler scored 12 and Troy Stefanski had seven points and 11 rebounds for Wheeler (1-12, 0-7).

• Michael Barrett scored 15 points to help lead Old Saybrook to a 56-36 win over North Branford in a Shoreline Conference game. Andrew DeAntonis had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists and freshman Sam Henry came off the bench to score seven for Old Saybrook (8-6), which qualified for the state tournament with the win.

• Old Lyme fell behind by 13 points and never recovered, dropping a 63-43 decision to Hyde of New Haven in the Shoreline Conference. Colin Devlin scored 13 points and Andrew Tyrol 11 for the Wildcats (7-7). Hyde is 8-6.

Girls

• Casey Sullivan scored 17 points to lift St. Bernard to a 43-30 win over Lyman Memorial in an ECC Small Division game. St. Bernard (11-6, 5-2) led 22-12 at halftime then outscored Lyman 12-1 in the third quarter to pull away. Kayla Paris scored 14 for St. Bernard and Chelsea Hussey led Lyman (9-7, 5-2) with 11 points.

• Jamie Hill scored 23 points to help lead Montville to a 48-24 win over Killingly in an ECC Medium Division game. Hill, a sophomore, had 19 of her points in the first half for the Indians (13-3, 6-2).

• Aunisha Dillon scored 24 points to lead Fitch past New London, 53-42, in the ECC Large Division. Brittany Murphy added 11 points and Lexis Foster 10 for the Falcons (8-8, 2-6), who qualified for the state and ECC tournaments, while Deanna McCarvill scored 17 points for the Whalers (2-13, 0-8), Alexis Childs-Harris had 12 and Tamia DeBarros had seven rebounds.

• Michelle Klinkowski scored 12 points to help lead Ledyard to a 44-35 win over Windham. Kylie Fustini had 11 rebounds and Bianca Matira had nine points for Ledyard (12-3, 6-2).

• Samantha Rentz and Kirsten Drobiak scored 21 points each to lead Griswold to a 60-44 win over Wheeler in an ECC Small Division game. Kendall McGrath had six assists, Rentz had six steals and Drobiak had 12 rebounds for Griswold (4-11, 3-4). Kayla Collins had 11 points and Ashley Souza scored 10 for Wheeler (2-13, 1-6).

• Waterford was selected Connecticut Sun High School Team of the Week for Jan. 22-28. The Lancers (14-3) won a pair of games last week, beating Montville in a key ECC Medium Division showdown, and Norwich Free Academy 57-52. They ran their winning streak to 11 on Monday and clinched at least a share of the division title with a 57-52 win over Stonington. Waterford will receive a commemorative plaque and a congratulatory letter from Sun coach Mike Thibault.

The Team of the Week is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Sun to highlight high school girls' basketball. The Sun have also hosted the CIAC Championship luncheon and the four state title games at Mohegan Sun Arena.
