Groton — A two-story home at 201 Great Brook Road was extensively damaged by a fire this morning.
Groton Center First Lt. Greg Hudgens said firefighters arrived at the 10:28 a.m. call and found heavy fire at the back of the house.
Crews quickly extinguished the fire and searched the home, which was not occupied.
The damage to the home appears to be confined to the right, rear of the house. Hudgens said the fire appeared to have started inside the basement, extended outside where the deck caught fire, and spread up the two stories to the roof line.
Hudgens said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
In addition to Center Groton, Poquonnock Bridge and Groton City fire departments were at the scene. A building inspector also responded.
The homeowner, who did not identify herself, said she and her 3-year-old child were not in the home at the time of the fire.
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
