Stonington — Borough firefighters quickly extinguished a fire on the back desk of an apartment house at 18 Elm St. early this evening.

Police and fire officials at the scene said one tenant was home at the time of the 7 p.m. fire but had been able to evacuate. There were no injuries.

The building is owned by Ellen Sutt of Groton Long Point, according to town records. Warden Paul Burgess was at the scene and said he was attempting to get in touch with her this evening.

Fire Marshall George Brennan was also at the scene starting his investigation into the cause of the fire. Firefighters from Wequetequock and Old Mystic departments also responded to the fire as well as Stonington Ambulance. The section of Elm Street west of the footbridge and railroad tracks is currently closed.
