    H.S. roundup: No. 2 Xavier beats Ledyard wrestlers

    Ledyard - Second-ranked Xavier High School of Middletown got the best of No. 4 Ledyard 37-20 during Saturday's Ledyard Duals wrestling tournament.

    The Colonels did go 3-1, defeating No. 7 Trumbull 53-13, No. 9 Southington 49-21 and unranked Middletown 48-15 to finish the regular season 23-2.

    Devon MarcAurele (106 pounds) went 4-0 on the day for Ledyard while Matt Jones (126), Justin Timberlake (132), Ryan Lyons (152), Alex Manwaring (160, 171), Colin Gim (170, 182) and Josh Lawrence (220) each went 3-1.

    Waterford went 0-4 in the meet, losing to Southington 45-19, Xavier 67-9, Trumbull 41-40 and Middletown 53-19. Tom Millaras (145) won all four of his matches for the Lancers (12-11).

    In other matches:

    • Cody Murphy (152 pounds) had three of Norwich Free Academy's 20 pins as the Wildcats went 4-0 and won the John Chacho Duals at Staples of Westport. NFA (18-9) beat Newtown 54-24, Greenwich 45-30, Norwalk 60-18 and Fairfield Prep 51-21. Josh Spring (220), Eric Dimalanta (132) and Murphy won four matches each and Tyler Courter (145) and Patrick Messick (126) won three matches each for NFA.

    • Bacon Academy had six individual champions to win its own Bobcat Classic tournament. Bacon finished with 196.5 points, 10 better than runnerup Terryville. Connor O'Brien (106), Chris Elrod (120), Howie Kilpatrick (132), Brandon Dufour (152), Tom Scott (195) and P.J. Sawicki (225) all finished first for the Bobcats and Ben Fowler (170) placed second.

    • Dan Kurasz finished first at 170 pounds, winning the championship match by technical fall, and Ryan Murtha won the heavyweight final 1-0, securing an escape in the third period, as Montville finished second at the Woodstock Invitational. Bristol Central won the tournament with 210 points, followed by the Indians with 204. Devin Beddard (182) was second for Montville, Tommy Wynoski (108), Joe Rainville (115) and John Rodgers (145) third and Jake Caskey (126), Nick Bellerose (138), Jacob Schmalz (154), Pat Bogan (160) and McKenzie Mahn (195) fourth.

    • Aaron Walmsley and Jermaine Frazer won three matches each as Griswold beat Derby 52-21, Granby 69-3 and Morgan 53-18. Dustin Falco, Cody Daley, Brandon Walsh, Aaron Wing and James Walsh each won twice for Griswold (17-6).

    Hockey

    • Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard lost to the Milford co-op team 7-1. Peter Gonski scored for Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard (0-11) and Josh Whitney had an assist. Fitch lost to Housatonic 4-3 Friday night. Sam Gonski scored twice, Tim Zack had a goal and Christopher Freeman and Peter Gonski had assists.

    Swimming

    • Caius Mergy and Adam Collins won two events each to lead Williams to a 52-42 win over Providence Country Day. Mergy won the 200 IM (2:22.27) and and 100 breaststroke (1:07.7) for the Blus and Collins captured the 500 freestyle (25.33) and 100 freestyle (1:00.19).

    Boys' basketball

    • Javon Thorbourne had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists and Matt Midder 16 points and three blocked shots in St. Thomas More's 64-47 victory over Wheeler of Providence. Qadeer Morgan added 10 points and 10 rebounds for St. Thomas More (9-6), Allante Crocker nine points and six assists and Rob Marino seven rebounds.
