Chester Hosts 'No Place to Go'

If you want to chase away the winter blues, No Place to Go, a quirky combo of music and theater, will be in Chester on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Performed by Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek (CBSRZ), 55 East Kings Highway, Chester, the piece is the first concert in CBSRZ's 2012 Music & More series. And, if you've got restless kids who need an outlet for their musical creativity, there is also a free children's workshop before the concert at 3 p.m.

Singer-songwriter-playwright Lipton creates songs that tell a story. His four-piece orchestra interweaves a mixture of musical forms--jazz, blues, folk, country, alternative, and pop--with the narrative.

Lipton says, "No Place to Go is a synthesis of my work as a playwright and songwriter. It's a slightly absurd tale about a pretty mundane experience. I've tried to blend a kind of emotional honesty with plenty of half-truths and humor and to capture the helplessness that comes from realizing that you have no leverage or bargaining power in a certain situation. I think that's a feeling a lot of people are having today."

Lipton's orchestra consists of Eben Levy, guitar; Ian Riggs, bass; and Vito Dieterle, sax. The group has appeared at Celebrate Brooklyn, Mass MOCA, Bryant Park, the Camden Opera House, University of Maine, Marlboro College, and in numerous New York venues and have been showcased on NPR and other radio stations throughout the US. In his role as a playwright, Lipton's work has been produced in New York, Los Angeles, Edinburgh, and Bern, Switzerland.

The children's workshop before the concert will give kids an informal opportunity to interact with the musicians and learn about their music and instruments. There is no charge for the workshop. Children may bring their own instruments, if they wish.

Tickets for the concert are $25 for adults; $20 for CBSRZ members; and $10 for children younger than 16. Refreshments will be served. For more information and to register, call the synagogue at860-526-8920 or visit www.cbsrz.org.
