Local Roundup: English leads T-More to victory

Kingston, R.I. - A.J. English scored 20 points to help lead the St. Thomas More men's basketball team to a 74-50 win over Westwind Prep if Arizona Sunday at the National Prep School Invitational.

The Chancellors went 2-1 at the tournament, which was held at the University of Rhode Island. Ky Howard scored 14 points and Rodney Sanders had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists for St. Thomas More (23-4).

College wrestling

• Coast Guard finished sixth at the All-Academy Championships at Air Force, with freshman heavyweight Joel Wyman leading the way with a fourth-place finish. Wyman went 2-2 as the Bears finished with 11.5 points, tops among the three Div. III teams. Anthony Signorello (133 pounds), Mike Giorgio (149) and Luke Taylor (165) also won matches for Coast Guard.

H.S. girls' basketball

• Ledyard lost to Windsor Locks 51-50 in overtime in a nonleague game Saturday night. Olivia DelGrosso scored 25 points, Bianca Matira and Michelle Klinikowski each scored 10 and Kylie Fustini had 11 rebounds for Ledyard (12-5).

H.S. swimming

• Norwich Free Academy lost to host Granby Memorial 90-88 in a nonleague meet Saturday night. Aidan Karam won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.76 and Walter Cook won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.93 for NFA (3-8).

The Wildcats also won two relays. Preston Spicer, Dan Riley, Cook and Karam won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:51.70 and Karam, Spicer, Tyler Keith and Cook won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.23.

College women's indoor track

• Coast Guard freshman Beth Gollin won the mile run as the Bears finished eighth at the Tufts Invitational Saturday. Gollin won with a time of 5:16.96. CGA's Abby Bishop was fourth in the pentathlon, breaking her own school record with 2,791 points.

In other Coast Guard results, Hannah Seeland was fourth in the weight throw, Emily Trudeau was fifth in the shot put and Meghan Kalinowski was sixth in the 3,000 meters.

• Sara Gildersleeve and Sarah Matthews set Conn College records, both qualifying for the ECAC Championships at the same time, as the Camels finished 10th at the Tufts Invitational Saturday.

Gildersleeve was sixth in the 60-meter dash at 8.04 and Matthews was fifth in the 600 at 1:41.26. Kerry Dermody was seventh in the 800, qualifying for the New England Div. I and ECAC meets with a time of 2:24.85. Lianne Swanson was seventh in the 5,000 and Samantha Pevear was eighth in the shot put for Conn.

College men's indoor track

• Brian Gooch and Dan Smoot set Conn College records as the Camels finished 14th at the Tufts Invitational Saturday. Gooch ran a 7.37 in the 60-meter dash to finish 15th and Smoot was 9.38 in the 60 hurdles, good for 18th place.

Conn's Alex Mavrovic won the mile run with a time of 4:18.37 and teammate Mike LeDuc was second at 4:22.04.

• Adam Scalesse won the 60-meter hurdles at the Tufts Invitational Saturday, leading Coast Guard to a tie for sixth place. Scalesse won in 8.32.

Other Coast Guard results include Kemron Beach being fourth in the shot put, Joe Kelly fourth in the 600, Jordan Lee fifth in the 800 and Clay Kosack seventh in the heptathlon. The 4x400 relay team of Kelcey Smith, Ben Hannon, Scalesse and Kelly finished second.
