Geno Auriemma has recruited so many dynamic offensive players during his 27 seasons that UConn's ability to play stifling defense often goes unnoticed.
Unless you talk to opposing coaches.
After the third-ranked Huskies won their ninth straight game on Saturday night with a 66-34 Big East victory over Rutgers, listen to what legendary Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer had to say:
"A lot of people don't give (UConn) credit for their defense. ... There are a lot of teams that they have played that are used to scoring in high numbers that don't. They play out the passing lanes and pressure the ball. They play personnel as well as anyone I've seen."
UConn, which has allowed only one opponent (South Florida) to score more than 60 points during its current win streak and has allowed less than 40 points in four of those games, will try to make it 10 straight today when the Huskies visit Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center (7 p.m., CBS Sports Network).
UConn (21-2, 9-1) has four players averaging in double figures, led by the lone senior - guard Tiffany Hayes - who is averaging 16.0 points per game. Sophomore point guard Bria Hartley (14.3), freshman reserve forward Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (14.0) and sophomore center Stefanie Dolson (10.3) provide the Huskies with great balance.
Louisville (17-6, 6-4) is 1-10 lifetime against UConn, the lone loss coming in the very first meeting when the Cardinals beat the Huskies 74-71 in the first round of the 1993 NCAA tournament.
