Amarin Corp. plc's fish-oil patents aren't just for people at risk of heart attacks. Other patents cover central nervous system diseases, and now they have been acquired by a Scottsdale, Ariz.-based firm called Prismic Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Prismic said Tuesday it had bought the assets of Scarista Limited, which had the exclusive right to develop, market and out-license Amarin-inspired products to treat disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Amarin, which has its largest worldwide presence in Groton, currently is focusing on its fish oil-derived product AMR101, which is under review by U.S. regulators for treatment of people with elevated fat in their blood.
