Movie tip: "The Artist"

This charmer is both a throwback - an homage to pre-talkies and old-time Hollywood - and a surprise - what kind of crazy person would expect a silent, black-and-white film to become a hit in 2012? The storyline echoes old favorites ("A Star Is Born," among them) as it follows a silent-film actor who loses his fame as motion pictures add sound. As he slides into obscurity, his protege - and potential love interest - soars to stardom. Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo are beguiling as the two leads. Director/writer Michel Hazanavicius makes clever use of the silent-film conceit, particularly in a sequence watching the stasrs fall in love while filming a scene and another where sound begins intruding on Dujardin's world. Yes, indeed, there's a reason this film has been winning all those awards.
