East Lyme - The work crews at the project site for the new Niantic River railroad bridge finished unloading 700 tons of steel parts in just two days and sent the shipping barge on its way Wednesday. The contractor had three days to move the parts, otherwise a fee would have been charged for delaying the shipping barge's return. With lights illuminating the barge, the crews worked late Tuesday to unload the last of the components before cleaning up the barge Wednesday morning. They plan to start assembling the structure to open and close the new bridge next week. Amtrak is building a two-track, electrified railroad bascule bridge across the Niantic River between East Lyme and Waterford, 58 feet south of the current bridge. Peter Finch, Amtrak project manager, said Wednesday he was pleased with the progress.
