North Stonington – One woman was taken to the hospital for trouble breathing after escaping from a camper fire Thursday evening at the Mystic Kampground of America at 118 Pendleton Hill Road.
Chief Charles Steinhart said the North Stonington Fire Department responded to the campground around 7 p.m. and found a fifth-wheel camper on fire. Those types of campers are typically towed by a pickup truck, Steinhart said, but the truck was not at the site and was undamaged.
Steinhart said it took 15 minutes to get the blaze under control and the department remained on scene for about two hours cleaning up. He said the structure of the trailer remained standing but the entire inside was gutted.
The female occupant was taken to Westerly Hospital by North Stonington Ambulance after suffering from trouble breathing related to smoke inhalation, Steinhart said. The other occupant was not there when the fire started, he said.
He said the American Red Cross would assist the occupants Thursday night.
Steinhart said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
