Groton – Crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are still working today to clean up the approximately 1,200 gallons of home heating oil that spilled in Wednesday’s accident involving a tanker truck and two other vehicles.
DEEP is also installing test wells to determine whether any oil has traveled into groundwater.
Ledge Light Health District officials are on scene to determine whether any private wells located nearby will need to be tested for contamination, said Baker Salisbury, executive director of Ledge Light. No public drinking water supplies are in proximity.
DEEP spokesman Dwayne Gardener said that about 2,700 gallons of oil-water mixture have been recovered thus far, and about 320 tons of oil-soaked soil has been removed. Water had been sprayed onto the truck and other vehicles by emergency crews.
He expected cleanup crews would be on the scene the rest of today and tomorrow.
The accident is under investigation by state police. All three drivers sustained minor injuries.
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
