Groton - The UConn Avery Point women's basketball team won their fourth straight game, beating Region 21 West Division rival Manchester Community College, 49-43, Wednesday.
With the win, the Pointers (13-6) move into sole possession of first place.
Becca Pope led Avery Point with 21 points, sinking four 3-pointers. Freshman Alex Marchinkoski had 11 points and five rebounds while Ally McDonald had six points and 10 rebounds.
The Pointers led 23-20 at halftime.
In other games:
• Alexi Howland had 12 points and four steals in Coast Guard's 56-47 loss to Springfield in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Alexa Hunko had a career-high tying 11 rebounds for the Bears (5-15, 1-14) who shot 29.4 percent from the field.
Kelly Slattery had a career-high 28 points for Springfield (12-10, 8-7).
• Three future UConn players have been selected to play in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association high school All-America game on March 31 at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Morian Jefferson (Glenn Heights, Texas), Breanna Stewart (North Syracuse, N.Y.) and Morgan Tuck (Bolingbrook, Ill.) were named to the 20-player roster.
Men's basketball
• Junior Greg Marshall scored a game-high 22 points and sophomore John Benedict had a season-high 17 points, leading Coast Guard to a 91-81 overtime win over Clark in the NEWMAC. Sophomore Kevin Sowers had 15 points and five assists for the Bears (8-12, 2-8) who snapped a three-game losing streak. Benedict's free throw with 36 seconds left forced overtime.
• Rodney Sanders scored 23 points in St. Thomas More's 76-70 loss at Northfield (Mass.) Mt. Hermon. A.J. English had 16 points and Ky Howard had 13 for the Chancellors (23-5).
Boys' basketball
• Williams School won its fourth straight game with a 52-45 win over Rocky Hill (R.I.). The Blues (4-10), who lost to Rocky Hill by 16 earlier in the season, were led by Rashad Young's 16 points and 14 apiece by Tucker Norman and Oliver Sherman. Sherman played a major role in the final two minutes by going 6-for-6 from the foul line.
• Corbin Corrigan had 15 points and Chris Fowler added 14 points in Wheeler's 76-60 loss to Putnam. Tyler Post grabbed 11 rebounds for the Lions (1-16).
• Ashbow Sebastin had 16 points and Drake Baton scored 15 points in Norwich Tech's 45-37 loss to Amistad. The Warriors are 4-14 overall.
Girls' basketball
• Marion Philippe had 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Williams School's 55-31 loss to Watkinson School. The Blues (3-8) only trailed by three at halftime before fading.
• Jessica Deschamps scored a game-high 19 points and Kaitlyn Mitchell added nine, leading Norwich Tech past Grasso Tech, 57-16, in the Constitution State Conference. Christine Murray had six points for Grasso (0-19).
• Megan Autencio scored 10 points and Montville held Ledyard to one point in the first quarter of a 29-26 Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division victory Tuesday night. Kim Bigelow added seven for the Indians (15-3, 8-2). Michelle Klinikowski scored nine points for the Colonels (12-6, 6-4).
H.S. hockey
• Blake Biancamano scored three goals, leading St. Bernard-NFA-Bacon Academy past Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard, 6-0. Conor O'Rourke, Andrew Gagnon and Steven Makowicki also scored for NFA (9-5) while Kenny Brooks and Joey Mitchell each had two assists and goalie Evan Callahan made 10 saves to earn the shutout. Alden Burns had 52 saves for East Lyme (0-12).
H.S. swimming
• Thomas Whittico won the 200 freestyle (2:01.87), 100 backstroke (1:06.31) and competed on the winning 200 freestyle relay team with Austin Toback, Evan Opsahl and Jorge Brackett, leading East Lyme past Daniel Hand, 86-85. Zach Kosakowski took first in the 50 freestyle (25.37) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay team with Adam Opsahl, Clayton Otter and Ryan Rubino for the Vikings (11-2). East Lyme's Ivan Carlson won the diving event with a score of 167.70 and qualified for the Class M meet.
College swimming
• Conn College sophomore Sam Gill has named Division III Swimmer of the Week as selected by CollegeSwimming.com. Gill won three events for the No. 22 Camels in a victory over Bates on Saturday, capturing the 50 butterfly in 23.54 seconds, the 100 fly in 50.91 and the 100 freestyle in a facility record-setting 47.65. He was also a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.
College honors
• The following Mitchell College athletes have been named to the All-New England Collegiate Conference Academic team for the fall semester:
Men's cross country - sophomore Drew Castagna, senior Joshua Mitchell; men's golf - senior Tad Maynard; men's soccer - senior Dustin Huguenin; women's soccer - junior Malorie Klieber, junior Rebecca Tabak, senior Anna Irons, senior Shannen Pelletier; women's volleyball - junior Arianna Thomas, sophomore Nicole Terni, senior Jennie Austin.
In addition the following local athletes from NECC schools were honored: Field hockey - Niantic senior Victoria Pappas (Regis); women's cross country - East Lyme sophomore MacKenzie Sherman (East Lyme); women's soccer - Colchester junior Katherine Bradley (Lesley) and Ledyard junior Danielle Celotto (Southern Vermont).

• Montville Little League will hold registration on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Fair Oaks. The date was incorrectly listed in a local sports calendar that ran in Wednesday's sports section.
