New Haven - Montville High School's Shatajah Wattley won the girls' 55-meter dash and was second in the 300 on Friday night at the Class S state championship indoor track meet at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.
Wattley took the dash in 7.20 seconds and finished the 300 in 40.83, edged out by Bloomfield's Rayanna Relerford (40.51).
Montville's Natalie Bowens added a victory in the long jump (16-10.75), as the Indians finished fifth in the team standings with 32 points. Old Saybrook was fourth with 34 points. Bloomfield won with 79.
Old Lyme's Nick Walker, Devin Byrne, Vincent Marafito and Patrick Wilczynski won the boys' 4x800 meter relay in 8:17.96 and Old Saybrook's team of Spencer Arbige, Greg Daley, Casey Gowrie and Sean Hughes took the sprint medley relay in 3:46.13.
Northwest Catholic of West Hartford won the boys' meet with 44 points. Old Lyme was fourth (29) and Old Saybrook sixth (28).
Other local boys in the top three were Old Saybrook's Nick Sumby, second in the pole vault; Griswold's Kyle Craig, second in the shot put; Old Lyme's Aaron Clippinger, third in the high jump; and Old Lyme's 4x400 team, second.
Other top local girls' finishers were Old Saybrook's Alyssa Giegerich, third in the pole vault; Old Lyme's Amy Lee, third in the 1,000; and Old Saybrook's 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams, both second.
Schedule changes
• The following events scheduled for today have been postponed due to the forecast of a winter storm: Boys' basketball: Manchester at NFA (to Monday, 7 p.m.); Ledyard at Griswold (to Thursday, 7 p.m.); Girls' basketball: Griswold at Ledyard (to Wednesday, 7 p.m.); Hockey: NFA-St. Bernard-Bacon at Brookfield-Bethel-Danbury (TBA); Wrestling: ECC tournament at Fitch (to Sunday, 1 p.m.).
In addition, the CIAC announced that today's Class L and Class M indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven have also been postponed. The Class L meet will be held on Monday at 4 p.m. and the Class M meet will be held on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Swimming
• Antonio Smith won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle in East Lyme's 91-78 victory over Waterford in the ECC. Zach Tyropolis won the 100 butterfly and swam a leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay and winning 400 freestyle relay for Waterford (2-9, 2-8). East Lyme is 12-2, 9-1, tied with Windham entering Tuesday's first-place showdown with the Whippets.
• Matt Peluso won the 500 freestyle in 5:32.34 in Ledyard-Stonington's 100-81 loss to Windham. Ledyard's 400 freestyle relay team of Collin Esquirol, Kyle Parry, Peluso and Caitie Near also took first with a time of 4:02.29.
• Christian Berg won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, leading Fitch past New London 84-57 in the ECC. Sam Watson took first in the 50 freestyle while Cameron Duffy won the 200 IM and Aidan Quinn won the 200 freestyle for the Falcons (9-2, 9-2). Liam Greene won the 500 freestyle and R.J. Woodstock won the 100 breaststroke for New London (0-11, 0-11).
Women's basketball
• Connectictut College lost to Colby College 71-56 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Tara Gabelman had 14 points and five rebounds in a foul-plagued 14 minutes for the Camels (16-5, 5-4).
Men's basketball
• Matt Vadas had 15 points, sinking the game-winning basket with 1.8 seconds left, to lift Conn College over Colby College 55-54 for its first NESCAC victory. Rob Harrigan had 12 points and Boris Jeremic added 11 and Bobby Bellotti had 10 rebounds for the Camels (7-15, 1-8).
College wrestling
• Freshman Nate Giorgio, the top-ranked 125-pound wrestler in New England, and his brother Mike each won two matches as Coast Guard beat Western New England 35-9 and lost to Johnson & Wales 36-11 in a tri-meet.
Nate Giorgio won by pin at 133 pounds in 3:36 against Western New England before winning a 15-0 tech fall in 2:57 against Johnson & Wales to pick up his 25th win of the season. He is 25-6 on the season with eight pins.
Mike Giorgio, also a freshman, won both times by pin, in 35 seconds at 157 pounds vs. Western New England and in 5:24 at 149 pounds vs. Johnson & Wales. Steve Eldridge, in his 46th season as head coach, was honored before the start of the meet for his 45 years of service in the federal government.
