New London firefighters rescued an unconscious elderly woman from her burning house at 18 Holly Terrace about 3 p.m.

Isabelle Roth, who neighbor said is in her 80s, was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where she is in critical condition.

The fire, which has been extinguished, caused extensive damage to the first floor and lesser damage to the rest of the two-story home. Fire Chief Ron Samul said the fire was first reported by a neighbor. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
