Roundup: Overtime goal gives Camels weekend sweep in women's hockey

New London - Molly Murphy scored with 2 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in overtime Sunday to lift the Connecticut College women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Neumann University and a two-day sweep of the Knights.

Conn (11-9-2) defeated Neumann 7-3 on Saturday.

Courtney Dumont, who scored three times Saturday, also scored Sunday for the Camels, her 11th goal of the season. Murphy added an assist and goalie Kelsie Fralick stopped 22 shots in the victory.

Diane Peters scored to give Neumann a 1-0 lead just 1:13 into the second period before Dumont tied it at the 9:18 mark of the second.

Men's hockey

• No. 4 Amherst College topped Connecticut College 5-2 in a NESCAC game, increasing its winning streak to six games overall and 10 games in the conference. Conn, which scored eight goals to beat Hamilton on Saturday, was held scoreless for the first 49:34 by Amherst (18-3-1, 15-1). Kevin Kelly and Julien Boutet scored third-period goals for Conn (6-13-3, 4-10-2).

Men's basketball

• A.J. English had 23 points and six rebounds for St. Thomas More in an 85-76 victory over West Point Prep. Torin Childs-Harris and Denzel Gregg each added 15 points for the Chancellors (24-5) and Childs-Harris had seven rebounds.

College wrestling

• Sophomore Luke Taylor won all three matches at 165 pounds, helping Coast Guard go 1-2 in a quad-meet at Bridgewater State on Saturday. The Bears beat Trinity 22-14 but lost to Rhode Island College 37-5 and Bridgewater 33-15. Taylor recorded technical falls against Trinity (17-2) and RIC (17-1) before pinning his opponent at 2:51 vs. Bridgewater.

In the win over Trinity, Mike Giorgio (157) won 12-4, Nolan Salyer (184) won 13-3 and Mark Howard (heavyweight) won 3-2. Anthony Signorello pinned his opponent in 5:01. Taylor accounted for the Bears' only points in the loss to RIC while Taylor and Giorgio (4-2 decision) won against Bridgewater with Salyer earning a forfeit victory.

College indoor track

• The Conn College women set four school records and the men set two during Saturday's Boston University Valentine's Invitational.

For the women, Kim Bolick set a school record in the 1,000-meter race (3:01.06) and qualified for the ECAC and All-New England Championship. Other records were set by Sara Gildersleeve (200, 26.36 seconds), Sarah Matthews (500, 1:19.36), and Carmen Palumbo (60 hurdles, 9.82), Palumbo qualified for the New England Division III Championship.

Also earning Division III qualifying standards were Michelle Wesley (800, 2:28.66) and Kerry Dermody (3,000, 10:49.83), while the distance medley relay team of Bolick, Matthews, Wesley and Lianne Swanson ran 12:57.11 to earn a spot in the ECAC meet.

For the men, Alex Mavrovic set a school record in the 3,000 (8:29.25) and qualified for the All-New England meet while Geoff Phaneuf broke a school record in the 200 (23.29). In addition, Old Lyme's Ian Rathkey qualified for the New England Division III meet in the 400 (51.63).

• Coast Guard freshman Beth Gollin ran a personal best time in the mile (5:13.57) and qualified for the ECAC and New England Division III meets during the BU Valentine's Invite on Saturday.
