New London – Police urge residents to be wary of a telephone scam involving individuals that offer bogus products or services.
Crime Prevention Officer Carl C. Brisson-Lopez said in a release that the scam has included callers claiming winning prizes, false chimney sweeping services, individuals from banks or organizations asking for updated account information and requests for people to take out cash advances or send money.
Brisson-Lopes said the scammers use a program that displays a false local phone number on caller ID, making it difficult for police to track the callers.
The police urge residents to not give out personal information, not to send strangers money and to avoid conducting unsolicited business over the telephone.
Police ask residents to contact a law enforcement agency if they believe they have received a scam phone call.
The reader web chat with Mitchell Etess, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohegan Gaming Authority, was held on Thursday, May 24.
