Local Roundup: East Lyme wraps up ECC boys' swimming title

Waterford's Tyropolis breaks 21-year pool mark in 100 butterfly

East Lyme - Zachary Kosakowski won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 0.99 seconds and was a member of two winning relays Friday as the East Lyme High School swimming team defeated Norwich Free Academy 100-78.

The win clinched the Eastern Connecticut Conference championship outright for East Lyme (14-2, 11-1).

Kosakowski, Sam Magna, A.J. Ferguson and Ryan Godin won the 200 medley relay in 1:55.59 and Kosakowski teamed with Andrew Rubino, Cameron Collinge and Ferguson to take the 200 free relay in 1:45.80.

Magna (200 IM), Eric Stirtan (50 freestyle), Dylan Luce (diving) and William Clement (500 freestyle) also won events for the Vikings.

Aidan Karam won the 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and helped win the 400 freestyle relay for NFA (3-12, 2-10).

In other meets:

• Waterford's Zach Tyropolis celebrated senior day by breaking a 21-year pool record in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:01.22, as the Lancers beat New London 100-57. The record was previously held by 1991 graduate Marc Benvenuti at 1:01.24. Tyropolis also swam a leg on the Lancers' 200 medley relay team. Justin Dobush won the 50 freestyle and the diving for Waterford (4-9, 4-8) and Matt Alfultis the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. Meredith Hird broke the school record in the 100 freestyle for New London (0-12, 0-12), finishing in 1:03.46 in the metered pool.

• Cameron Duffy (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Christian Berg (500 freestyle, 100 backstroke) each won two individual events as Fitch beat Windham 102-65, avenging a defeat to the Whippets earlier in the season. Aidan Quinn won the 50 freestyle in 22.92 seconds and Aidan Ely took the 200 individual medley for Fitch (10-2, 9-2), which has now beaten every team in the conference at least once.

H.S. wrestling

• Ledyard is in first place after the first day of the Class M state championships at Windham High School. The Colonels have 79.5 points, leading Windham (66), Bacon Academy (59), Waterford (57) and Montville (55).

• Griswold is tied for third place after day one of the Class S championships being held at Haddam-Killingworth. Nonnewaug of Woodbury leads with 72.5 points, followed by H-K (59), Terryville (57) and Griswold (57).

College indoor track

• Coast Guard sophomore Abby Bishop placed eighth in a field of 18 competitors to earn Division III New England honors in the pentathlon at Smith College. Bishop's mark of 2,983, included a second-place finish in the 800 meters (2:28.96), fourth in the long jump (16-5.25) and seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (9.92). Coast Guard is in eighth place after day one.

In the men's heptathlon, sophomore Clay Kosack finished day one in eighth place with 2,234 points. Among his top finishes were fourth in the shot put (35-3.75), fifth in the long jump (19-6.75) and sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.59). The heptathlon continues today.

College men's hockey

• Michael Doherty scored with 4:04 remaining in regulation to lift Colby College to a 3-2 victory at Connecticut College. Chris Fogg had a goal and an assist for Conn (6-14-4, 4-11-2) and Mike Sinsigalli scored his 10th goal of the season. Mike Petchonka finished with 26 saves.

College women's hockey

• Ariel DiPasquale scored assisted by Andrea McRae and Samantha Schuffenecker in Connecticut College's 2-1 loss to Williams. Williams led 2-0 after the first period. Amy Leichliter made 20 saves for Conn (11-10-2).

College baseball

• Sophomore left-hander Brian Ward pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings to lift UConn to an 8-0 win over Indiana in the season opener at the Big Ten/Big East Challenge at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Ward (6-1 last season) allowed four hits and struck out five, as the Huskies raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first two innings. Old Lyme's Ryan Fuller was 2-for-3 for the Huskies, doubling in L.J. Mazzilli for the first run of the season in the first inning and singling in Mazzilli again in the ninth.

College swimming

• Coast Guard Academy's men are in second place with 220 points and the women in third place with 128.5 after the first day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. MIT is in first place in both the men's and women's meets.

The Coast Guard team of Christian Brindamour, Johnson Knox, Brian McGuiness and Dan Beshoar was second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:23.83 and the Bears' team of Bryan Andrews, Knox, Preston Strobel and Brian McGuiness took second in the 400 medley relay in 3:27.44.
