Essex —Two southeastern Connecticut residents were killed his morning in a two-car crash on the northbound lanes of Route 9 about a half mile south of Exit 3.

Muhammad Afzaal, 54, of 8 Orchard St., first floor, New London, and Eunmi Yoon, 28, of 207 North Stonington Road, Mystic, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:47 a.m. crash, according to state police. Their bodies were taken to the Office of the Chief State Medical Examiner. There were no passengers in either of the cars, a Nissan Altima driven by Afzaal and a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Yoon. The road was closed for several hours.

State police are investigating the cause of the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call Trooper Lanouette at 860-599-2100.

Afzaal was arrested by Stonington police in March of 2011 and charged with raping a woman he knew at a Mystic business on Dec. 24, 2010. Those charges are still pending in New London Superior Court and he had been free on a $125,000 bond.
