New London - The Mitchell College women's basketball team outscored Becker College 20-9 over the last 6 minutes, 15 seconds of Saturday's New England Collegiate Conference game to win 63-57.
The Mariners (8-16, 7-11) clinched a berth in the NECC tournament with the victory. Sheanna James had 16 points and seven steals, Kaylee Cerruto scored 18, Hannah Smith had 11 points and Bianca Young had 13 rebounds for Mitchell.
In other games:
• Coast Guard closed out its season with a 79-44 loss to WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Larla Brown, Brittney Zimmerman and Kaitlin Ward had 10 points each for Coast Guard (5-19, 1-17).
• Conn College was ousted from the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament, losing to Tufts 57-40 in the quarterfinals. Jeanna Dunleavy scored 13 and former Windham High standout Carlee Smith had 10 points for Conn (16-7).
Men's basketball
• Coast Guard finished off its season with a 78-68 loss to Babson in a NEWMAC game. Greg Marshall scored a game-high 19 for Coast Guard (8-14, 2-10), Kevin Sowers had 13 points and five rebounds and Trip Fernandes, the team's only senior, scored 11 with six rebounds on senior day.
• Becker College ended Mitchell College's season with an 87-49 win in a NECC game. Joshua Ford scored 15 with 11 rebounds, Enoch Contreras scored 12 and Alex Vess had nine rebounds for Mitchell (5-18, 3-13). Becker (21-4, 16-0) will host the NECC tournament semifinals and finals next week.
• Avery Point's Jevon Williams scored 35 points, including six 3-pointers, but the Pointers lost to Mass. Bay Community College 88-83. Philkwan Tate had 21 points and Josh Bowyer scored 16 for Avery Point (4-14).
Men's hockey
• Bowdoin led 3-1 after one period and went on to beat Conn College 6-4 in a NESCAC game. Sean Curran scored twice, Julien Boutet had a goal and an assist and J.J. McGregor scored for Conn (6-15-3, 4-12-2).
Women's hockey
• Williams College beat Conn College 3-1 in a NESCAC game. Leigh Getz scored for Conn.
Baseball
• Purdue scored three times in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth to beat UConn 9-4 in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge at St. Petersburg, Fla. Old Lyme's Ryan Fuller had two hits and scored twice and L.J. Mazzilli homered for UConn (1-1).
Men's indoor track
• Coast Guard Academy sophomore Adam Scalesse broke his own facility record and won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.32 seconds at the Division III New England Championships at Springfield College.
Sophomore Clay Kosack placed sixth in the heptathlon with 3,828 points, also earning All-New England honors. Kosack moved up from eighth on day one. Second-day highlights included finishing second in the 1,000 meters (2:50.09) and third in the pole vault (10-11.75).
The Bears 4x400 relay team of Kelcey Smith, Ben Hannon, Joe Hill and Scalesse earned All-New England honors with a seventh-place finish, posting a time of 3:28.44.
Coast Guard finished 15th.
• Connecticut College sophomore Mike LeDuc posted a personal-best time of 8:36.11 to finish fifth in the 3,000 meters at the New England Division III Championship. LeDuc earned All-New England honors for his finish. Conn tied Trinity for 20th place.
Women's indoor track
• A trio of sophomores earned All-New England honors with top-eight finishes, leading Coast Guard at the Division III New England Championships at Smith College.
Sophomore Emily Trudeau broke the school record and placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 40-4.75, while classmate Hannah Seeland placed seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 45-8.
Sophomore Abby Bishop broke her own school record (2,983) and placed eighth in a field of 18 competitors in the heptathlon on Friday.
The Bears finished 17th.
• Connecticut College's Kim Bolick finished seventh in the 1,000 meters (3:01.30), earning All-New England Division III honors.
In the distance medley relay, Conn's Kerry Dermody, Michelle Wesley, Ally Bonito and Lianne Swanson earned All-New England honors with an eighth-place finish in 13:07.76.
Conn's Sarah Matthews broke her own school record in the 600 meters, posting a time of 1:40.50.
A total of 16 events have been found.
