H.S. Roundup: Old Saybrook wins Class S wrestling crown

Haddam — Old Saybrook/Westbrook's cooperative high school wrestling team had four champions Saturday to win the Class S state championship at Haddam-Killingworth, finishing with 180.5 points. Griswold was second with 162.

Old Saybrook/Westbrook's Eric Manuel decisioned Griswold's Dustin Falco 7-3 at 126 pounds, David Colvin decisioned Josh Fontanez of Portland 4-3 at 132 pounds, Dalton Ahern decisioned John D'Agostino of Nonnewaug 16-4 at 152 pounds and Elton Purvis decisioned Chris Young of Rocky Hill 3-1 at 170.

Other local champions were Lyiam Mathis of Old Lyme (106), Griswold's Dylan Martel (113) and Griswold's Brandon Walsh (138).

Old Saybrook/Westbrook's Anthony Onorato was runner-up at 145 pounds and teammate Josh Schneider third at 113. Griswold's Aaron Wing was runner-up at 182 pounds.

In other meets:

• East Lyme's Kareem Small won the 106-pound championship at the Class L state championship being held at Bristol Central.

Small decisioned Matt Elias of Hand 7-3, leading the Vikings to an eighth-place finish with 107.5 points. Hand won the meet with 233.

Also for East Lyme, Alex Cusano was the runner-up at 170 pounds, Vinny Cancelmo was third at 220 and Jacob Kelleher fourth at 160.

• Norwich Free Academy teammates Tyler Courter (145) and John Crooks (195) each finished fourth in the Class LL state championship at Trumbull. Eric Dimalanta added a fifth at 132 pounds for the Wildcats, who were eighth in the team standings with 85 points. Xavier of Middletown won with 242 points.

Girls' basketball

• Kayla McAvoy had 17 points and 12 rebounds in Old Saybrook's 44-33 victory over Portland in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament.

Kelly Ratchford added nine points and Paige Trabucchi 10 rebounds for Old Saybrook (16-7), which was the No. 6 seed. Portland was the third seed, but has lost three times to the Rams this season.

Old Saybrook will play in the semifinals on Tuesday night at Valley Regional.

"Defense was the difference in the game," Old Saybrook coach Steve Woods said. "We were up two at the half, two going into the fourth quarter. Then we got 'em; we outscored them 16-7 in the fourth quarter.

"This is a real quality win for us."

Boys' basketball

• Jackson Donahue finished with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in Stonington's 82-63 victory over Lyman Memorial. Casey Sartor added 15 points, five assists and two steals, Tim Ferraro 12 points and Jake Nolan 10 for the Bears, which finished the regular season 15-5. Chris Gonnelli had 25 points and 12 rebounds for Lyman (3-16) and Keith Chamberlain 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Fencing

• Norwich Free Academy's girls and Bacon Academy's boys won the team foil championships at the ECC Fencing tournament at Griswold High School.

Hanna Deglin, Eleni Provatas and Renee Colbath competed for NFA. Deglin was the girls' individual foil champion, followed by Provatas, Waterford's Nickolette Fardon and Fitch's Ashley Adams.

East Lyme's Pam Smith won the girls' epee, followed by NFA's Genevieve Remondi, Waterford's Cassie Sargent and St. Bernard's Caitlin Wagner.

Bacon's winning foil team consisted of Christian Corbitt, Matt Benjamin and Max Levesque. Corbitt was third individually behind champion Kyle Young of NFA and Justin Cavitt of St. Bernard. Collin Duval of Ledyard was fourth.

Fitch's Zach Nado won the boys' epee, followed by St. Bernard's Daniel Gehan, St. Bernard's Christian Gospodinoff and NFA's Kenny Wen.

Hockey

• Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard won its first game of the season, beating Shepaug-Litchfield-Nonnewaug 5-2 Friday night. Peter Gonski and Sam Gonski had a goal and an assist each for the Eagles (1-14), Travis Kohl, Christopher Freeman and Kyle Gurnee also scored and Josh Whitney, Dillon Jennings, Kaleb Twomey and Keegan Twomey had assists.

Swimming

• Former New London swimmer Kathryn Hammond is the school's record-holder in the 100-yard freestyle. The information was incorrect in a story on page F4 of Saturday's edition of The Day.
