Waterford - Nolan Long had 18 points, 15 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the Waterford High School boys' basketball team to a 63-51 victory over Woodstock Academy on Tuesday night in their regular-season finale.
The Lancers, who won the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division title a week ago - their first ECC crown since 1976 - finish the regular season 19-1. They are seeded second in the upcoming ECC tournament and will play either No. 7 Tourtellotte or No. 10 Bacon Academy in the quarterfinals on Saturday at St. Bernard (4 p.m.)
Mike Martin had 14 points and Casey Sullivan added 10 for Waterford, which 28-13 at halftime.
In other games:
• Chris Fowler had 23 points, five rebounds and six steals in Wheeler's 52-46 loss to Putnam.
Tyler Post had eight rebounds and Corbin Corrigan added five assists for the Lions, who finish the season at 2-18.
Girls' basketball
• Second-seeded Cromwell advanced to the finals of the Shoreline Conference tournament with a 58-37 win over No. 6 Old Saybrook at Valley Regional. The Rams were coming off an upset win over No. 3 Portland in the quarterfinals.
Cromwell will play No. 1 Coginchaug, a 56-31 winner over No. 5 Hyde of New Haven, in Friday's championship game. Between the two semifinals, Old Saybrook's Kayla McAvoy and Kelly Ratchfield and Old Lyme's Nikki Strizzi were honored for making the All-Shoreline Conference first team.
Women's basketball
• Mitchell College, the No. 6 seed, lost to No. 3 Newbury College, 89-59, in a New England Collegiate Conference tournament first-round game. The Mariners trailed by just four (36-32) at halftime before being outscored 53-27 in the second half. Hannah Smith had 18 points, Zilka Navarro added 15 points and Sheanna James finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for Mitchell (8-17).
• Avery Point had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 70-54 loss at Community College of Rhode Island. Sophomore Becca Pope had 21 points and freshman Melissa Bastian added 11 for the Pointers (14-7).
H.S. swimming
• Andrew Lewis won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, leading Fitch past Ledyard-Stonington, 102-68, in the ECC. Christian Berg also was a double winner (100 freestyle, 200 IM) for the Falcons (11-2, 10-2). Collin Esquirol took first in the 100 backstroke for the Colonels (6-7, 6-6).
College swimming
• The Connecticut College duo of Esther Mehesz and Julie Pielock earned spots in the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's swimming and diving all-conference team. Mehesz excelled in the 1,000 yard freestyle and Pielock competed in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
