Groton - The U.S. Navy Los Angeles Class attack submarine USS Springfield, (SSN 761), passed under the Gold Star Memorial Bridge as it made its way up the Thames River Thursday.

The submarine was returning to the U.S. Navy Submarine Base in Groton from what the Navy called local operations. The Springfield was built at Electric Boat in Groton and commissioned in January 1993.
