New London — Police were on the scene of a reported shooting on Mountain Avenue in New London around 9:30 Saturday night.

A witness who lives on Mountain Avenue reported seeing the male victim limping down the street. A woman with him was calling for someone to phone 9-1-1.

"He was holding up his right leg," said the witness, Michelle Allen. Allen said she had just returned home from an event at Ocean Beach Park in honor of former New London Police Capt. William Dittman. She said she went into her house to change her clothes and then heard multiple gunshots.

At around 10 p.m., Police were blocking off the street beginning at around 53 Mountain Ave. Police tagged as evidence a black Acura belonging to Lermaine Carter, who lives at 54 Mountain Ave. The Acura had a shattered driver's side rear window.

Lermaine Carter and his father, Willie Carter, were standing outside their residence Saturday night. Willie Carter said he and his granddaughter were in their apartment when he heard multiple gunshots, and made sure to get his granddaughter to lie down on the floor.

Willie Carter said he "saw the guy lying on the ground." He said the victim was conscious, and "he was just saying 'help me, help me.'"

Bloodstains on the street stretched from around 54 Mountain Ave. to around 64 Mountain Ave.

Police were using a police dog at the scene and interviewing witnesses around 10:30 p.m.
