East Lyme man killed in Route 9 accident

An East Lyme man who coached at the Williams School in New London and worked as a hotel manager locally died Friday morning in a one-car accident on Route 9 in Berlin.

Police said Brian Chrimes, 30, was traveling north on Route 9, just south of Exit 24, when his Dodge Dakota swerved into the left lane and onto the left shoulder, striking the guard rail. He was unresponsive when police and paramedics arrived at the scene. He was taken to New Britain Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"He was a great guy. Everybody loved him," his father Richard Chrimes said Saturday. "He cared about people and he treated everyone the same."

Brian Chrimes graduated from the Williams School in 2001 and coached the girls' basketball, lacrosse and soccer teams alongside his father.

He grew up in Montville and East Lyme and was about to begin intensive training in the Motel 6 hotel management school, Chrimes' father said.

He was not married and does not have any children, his father said, but filled what little free time he had with family and friends.

"He loved his parents, family, and friends more than anything in this world," his best friend Michelle Ross said in an email Saturday to The Day. "He was the best man that there ever could be. If anyone he knew needed something, he would do anything in the world to help them. I don't know what I will do without him, but I want you to know that he is the best person in the world and he will be dearly missed."

Richard Chrimes said the accident wasn't what killed his son, and the family is waiting for the autopsy results.

Visiting hours will be held next Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Thomas L. Neilan East Lyme Funeral Home at 48 Grand St. in Niantic. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in New London.

Police at Troop H in Hartford are looking for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call them at (860) 534-1000. The case remains under investigation.
