As an alum of the University of Rhode Island, it was great to see the campus and the Ryan Center on national TV on Sunday. The Ryan Center, where I've spent a lot of time watching the URI men's team play, is hosting the UConn Invitational, more formally known as the NCAA Women's Tournament.
Since some of you will be heading back to Kingston (no "w") on Tuesday for the UConn-Kentucky game, I'm here to serve as your guide to places to eat and drink before or after the game.
Cucina Twist: the closest place to campus to get a bite to eat and a cocktail. Comfortable dining room and bar. Stick with the Italian offerings.
Mews Tavern: Extensive menu, 69 beers on tap, three bars, and a staff that communicates through headsets gives this place a happening vibe. Best bets: wood-fired pizzas and calzones.
Rhody Joe's Saloon: Another URI hangout. Lots of TVs in the bar tuned to sports. Kind of a Rhody version of Applebee's, with a menu heavy on apps and burgers.
Fat Bellys Irish Pub and Grille: A smallish storefront with a modest menu but a fun spot to grab a drink and watch the Main Street goings on. Excellent tap selection, and the BBQ chicken nachos are a must order.
El Fuego Mexican Grill: Another Main Street storefront. Typical menu, but tasty tacos, burritos and quesadilas. Make sure to check out the specials board. No alcohol.
