Preston — Two dogs and a cat escaped unharmed after a fire damaged a home Friday afternoon on Young Court.

Preston Fire Chief Tom Casey said crews responding around 12:08 p.m. found heavy fire in the attic at the 1 Young Court home.

Crews ventilated the roof then attacked the fire from the inside and had it under control within 30 minutes, Casey said.

Two people live in the home, Casey said, but neither were there at the time. The animals escaped safely and no injuries were reported, Casey said.

"There was heavy damage to the attic and a second-floor bedroom, and moderate smoke and water damage throughout the house," Casey said.

No foul play was suspected and the blaze appeared accidental, Casey said.

Responding departments included Preston City, Voluntown, Griswold, Jewett City, Mohegan Tribal, Mashantucket Fire, Mohegan Fire, Ledyard, Norwich and Old Mystic.
