A sophomore at the University of New Haven who was found dead Wednesday morning on a walking path near the school committed suicide, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Thursday.

University President Steven H. Kaplan said 20-year-old Stirling Danskin, of Waterford, was discovered on Boston Post Road several blocks away from the main campus.

The cause of death is not known, but there are no signs of foul play, Kaplan said. West Haven police are investigating the incident.

Police said a person walking the path discovered the body and called 911.

Danskin, a 2010 graduate of Waterford High School, was majoring in music and sound recording.

University officials offered counseling to students Wednesday. Counseling is also available today from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Office of Counseling Services in Sheffield Hall.
