H.S. roundup: Unbeaten Rockville hands Waterford first softball loss

Rockville — Rockville High School's Kaitlyn Lajoie pitched a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts Saturday in a 2-1 softball victory over No. 5 Waterford.

Waterford's Alyssa Hancock led off the game with a walk, two stolen bases and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Rockville (7-0) tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-out error and scored what proved to be the game-winner in the second inning on an RBI double by Emily Burg.

Kelli Connors took the loss for Waterford (6-1), allowing five hits, striking out five and walking two.

In other games:

• Griswold scored seven runs in the first inning and went on to beat Windham 16-1 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division. The game ended after five innings because of the mercy rule. Nycole Sylvestre (two doubles), Elizabeth Olszewski (four runs scored) and Emily Slonski (three runs) had three hits each for Griswold (6-2, 3-0). Kirsten Drobiak (5-2) pitched a three-hitter for the win.

• Haley McCall was 3-for-4 with a game-winning, two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning as Lyman Memorial edged Wheeler 2-1 in the ECC Small Division. Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth, Sierra Ballsieper tied the game with a single and scored the winning run on McCall's hit. Ballsieper was 2-for-3 and winning pitcher Emily Vigue pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts for Lyman (4-2, 3-0). Kaite Morgan walked with the bases loaded in the fifth to force in the only run for Wheeler (4-3, 1-2). Wheeler pitcher Summer Cipriani struck out seven and walked none.

Baseball

• Willie Rios hit a two-run homer, his first of the year, to help St. Bernard beat East Catholic 6-4. Bryan Harper and Jon Malchiodi each had a double and an RBI for the Saints (4-3) while Sean Hurley went 2-for-3 and Pete Aldrich allowed only two hits and two runs in five innings.

• Williams School scored in the top of the first inning, but Forman came back for a 9-1 win. Jack Shannon singled home Andy Meagher, who had two hits, for Williams. Aaron Hosking took the loss, striking out eight with two walks.

Girls' lacrosse

• Glastonbury jumped out to a 12-4 halftime lead and went on to beat East Lyme 17-11. Erin Fritz had three goals and two assists, Kiki Ryan scored three times and Jill Bartlett and Erin DeLucca had two goals and two assists each for East Lyme (4-2).

• Michaela Holland and Caitlin Larmann scored five goals each for Ledyard in a 17-11 victory over Wheeler in the ECC Small Division. Kerrie Gardner added two goals for Ledyard (3-2, 3-1) and Colleen Rusk made 11 saves. Ashley Iorio scored five times for Wheeler (0-3-1, 0-2), Lindsey Porter had three goals and Amy White had two goals and one assist.

• Old Lyme lost to Branford 18-10. Liz Scott, Catie Quaratella and Reba Gagne had two goals each for Old Lyme (2-2).

Boys' lacrosse

• Casey Sullivan scored five goals and had two assists to lead Waterford to a 9-8 win over RHAM. Shawn O'Loughlin, Andrew Nassetta, Jon Thomas and Ryan Brouwer also scored and Jake Wiseman made 11 saves for Waterford (4-2).

• Williams led 6-1 at halftime and held on to beat Falmouth 7-6. Sam Miller scored three goals, Wes Duncan and Will McKenzie each had a goal and an assist and Xavier Mills and Jack Fader had two assists each for Williams (6-0).

• Conor O'Rourke had four goals and two assists to lead Norwich Free Academy to a 12-5 win over Newington. Nate Wilson had three goals, Steven Makowicki scored twice, David Cedrone had a goal and three assists and Evan Callahan made 19 saves for NFA (6-1).

• Stonington lost to Hand of Madison 3-1. Dan Riordan scored the goal, Zach Poirier had an assist and Mike Brandon made 16 saves for Stonington (3-2).

Boys' tennis

• Williams beat Forman 7-0. Sam Buffum, Adam Verhoeff, Jon Powell, Jenner Foster, Rudy Harvey and Brian Bradley won singles matches.

• Stonington lost to Newington 5-2 Friday. Casey Sartor won at No. 2 singles and the doubles team of Chris Manfredi and Alan Carroll also won for Stonington (2-2).

Girls' tennis

• Stonington beat Bacon Academy 7-0 in an ECC Medium Division match Friday. Anika Burgess, Chloe Slater, Caroline Kam and Molly Kam won singles matches for the Bears (4-0, 4-0).

Crew

• The Stonington girls' varsity 1 team came in second at the Farmington Invitational, completing the 1,200-meter course in 4:15. Stonington finished first in the girls' varsity 2 and varsity 3 races.
