Officers search for clues in Cirioni death

Montville — More than 50 officers convened in the Oakdale section of town Tuesday, hoping to find clues in the 2006 disappearance and death of 26-year-old Erika Cirioni of Norwich.

Norwich Lt. Mark Rankowitz said 50 to 60 law enforcement officials from the Southeastern Connecticut Cold Case Unit, state and Norwich police started the canvass around 7:30 a.m.

He said officers were going door-to-door in the area of Oxoboxo Dam Road, where Cirioni's remains were found in a wooded area on March 18 by a group of children who were playing nearby.

A command center was set up at the Best Way gas station on Old Colchester Road.

Cirioni's mother, Carol Cirioni, said a city detective told her Monday of the impending search but had few other details. "I'm in the dark just like everybody else," Carol Cirioni said Tuesday afternoon.

She said she has passed on to police any tips she has received from people who knew Erika, as well as records of the calls sent from and received by Erika's cellphone on the night she went missing. She was last seen on Division Street in Norwich on Dec. 31, 2006. Her cellphone was last used at 11:50 p.m. that night.

The state medical examiner's office said it was unable to determine the cause and manner of her death.

Carol Cirioni said she visited the site where Erika's remains were found in March. She said Tuesday that the developments in the case, including the search, are "good news because I have her now. Not the way I wanted her, but you know, she's back."

"Now, I want to find out who did this to her," she said.

The Cold Case Unit was assisted by a team from the FBI, which examined the area for clues.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to contact Norwich police at (860) 886-5561 or the Cold Case tip line at (866) 623-8058 or by email at cold.case@ct.gov or in writing at Cold Case Unit, P.O. Box 962, Rocky Hill, CT 06067. All communications will be kept confidential.
