Pfizer's Read No. 2 paid pharma exec

Ian Read, chief executive of Pfizer Inc., rose to No. 2 on the list of most highly compensated drug company executives last year, raking in $25 million in base pay, bonuses and stock awards.

FiercePharma's annual rankings placed William Weldon, retired head of Johnson & Johnson, as top earner in the pharmaceutical field, at $26.7 million. But Weldon, along with other members of the previous year's Top 10 Robert Coury of Mylan, Daniel Vasella of Novartis and Kevin Sharer of Amgen, no longer holds the reins.

And Read deposed another former Top 10 earner - Jeffrey B. Kindler, Pfizer's previous CEO.
