Groton — A crash involving a Groton Town police cruiser and a motorcycle Thursday afternoon shut down a portion of Route 12 for more than an hour and sent the motorcyclist to the hospital.

Police said the driver of the motorcycle, which appeared to be a red Honda Gold Wing, suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The officer was not injured, police said.

The crash, at the intersection of Route 12 and Toll Gate Road, closed Route 12 from Pleasant Valley Road to Charter Oak Road for approximately an hour and a half.

The accident occurred around 4 p.m., just as a light rain began to fall. The motorcycle incurred minor damage, but the police cruiser’s front bumper fell off. Both vehicles were towed.
