Day off mark with education editorial

The Day is right to press for legislative action on education reform but off the mark in finding meaningful reform in either the current bill or its earlier version, neither of which has much to say about education even as they outline vague organizational measures.

In The Day's own language the heart of the "unprecedented authority the administration seeks to aggressively intervene on the operation of struggling schools," "Legislature's biggest job left undone," (May 1), is in providing the education commissioner with "the power" to make such "operational changes" with no mention of the commissioner's qualification, by credential or stated plan of action, to effect meaningful reform in said operations, much less in the applied processes of education.

In urging compromise The Day, again, bogs down in operations, urging legislators to give "superintendents greater ability to remove demonstratively under-performing teachers."

Nowhere is there any mention of the conditions for and methods of enriching learning environments; nowhere a hint that neuroscience and sociology are among the primary determinants of "operational" modes and that these demand due diligence.
