Connecticut wrong to end death penalty

The Day's April 26 lead story, "Malloy signs death penalty repeal into law," was appropriately summarized by the governor himself commenting "it is a moment for sober reflection, not celebration." Any time we might debate the use of capital punishment, it is only because there's been a horrible tragedy committed which removes any celebration consideration.

While the death penalty is and will never be a murder deterrent, it can and always will be a rational and just response to the most vicious actions people might perform on one another. Society is not imposing the death penalty on Jared Loughner, who murdered six and shot former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona in the head, Jared Loughner imposed it on himself.
