Scrutiny of school finances begins in North Stonington

North Stonington — A preliminary forensic audit of the school district’s budget is under way, results of which may lead to a full audit of school finances.

The Board of Selectman last week voted for the audit, which will cost $2,500 and will be overseen by the Board of Finance.

The audit was originally requested by the Board of Education’s facilities and finance committee after discrepancies were found in the usage of a district credit card held by Superintendent of Schools Natalie Pukas. Pukas has not used the card since November, when discrepancies over its use first arose.

Pukas has since hired an attorney.

The school board voted at its April 18 meeting to not use district funds for a forensic audit.

The audit, which began late last week, will look at a few years of credit card charges and school budgets. A report is expected soon, possibly at tonight’s school board meeting, where an agenda item calls for a “forensic audit update.”

Pukas has served as the North Stonington superintendent for 12 years and will retire this summer after 38 total years as a district employee.
