Forty-three area students were among 2,300 from Central Connecticut State University to graduate from the school Friday night in Hartford.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy delivered the commencement address at the ceremony, which marks 163 years of existence for CCSU, the first and oldest public institution of higher education in the state.

About 93 percent of graduates are from Connecticut; the remaining 7 percent are from 17 different states and 14 foreign countries.

CCSU President Jack Miller presided over the ceremony.

Also speaking were Matt Fleury, on behalf of the Connecticut State University Board of Regents, Fred B. Agee III of New Britain, a 1980 graduate of CCSU and President of the CCSU Alumni Association, and Class President Erika Dawson-Head, also of New Britain, who shared her thoughts about her journey as a mother who returned to CCSU after being away from it for more than 11 years, earning a bachelor of arts degree in Political Science and Sociology on Friday.
