Ledyard – By a vote of 499-56, residents approved the town’s proposed $49.16 million spending plan for 2012-13 on Tuesday.

The $49.16 million budget requires no tax increase and is 0.24 percent less than the current budget.

The Town Council is expected to set the tax rate during its regular meeting tonight at 7 p.m.

Of the town’s 8,844 registered voters, 6.2 percent of them cast ballots.

The budget is comprised of a general government budget of $19,624,588 and a Board of Education budget of $29,544,964. The general government budget has decreased by $53,846 or 0.27 percent and the Board of Education budget decreased by $63,000 or 0.21 percent

“I think the low numbers are a validation of the hard work we (the Town Council and the Board of Education) have done,” Town Council Chairman Sean Sullivan said Tuesday.
