The Commoner and Sweetie's Bakery and Cafe, two of downtown New London's newest eateries, took the first and second place prizes at New London Main Street's recent Spring Food Stroll.
Nearly 50 businesses participated in the stroll, and many took part in the Culinary Excellence Competition, a competition that judged the downtown eateries in four categories: appearance, texture, taste and originality.
New to this season's stroll was the addition of the "Best Dessert" category.
Chef instructors from the Culinary Arts program at Johnson & Wales University judged the competition.
1st place: Crab cake by The Commoner
2nd place: Grandma's Mac & Cheese by Sweetie's Bakery and Café
3rd place: Chicken and root vegetable stew with Spanish rice and plantain by Mambo Bar & Restaurant
1st place: Cupcakes by The Cake Lady, hosted at the Garde Arts Center
2nd place: Lemon bars by You Take the Cake, hosted at Pinc! Boutique
3rd place: Key lime pie by Little Sister's Bake Shop
