New London - Peter Reichard was sworn in Monday in the mayor's office as the city's new deputy police chief.

He replaces Marshall Segar, whose contract was not renewed in January, and the post has been vacant ever since.

One of 26 candidates for the position, Reichard is a former assistant police chief in the New Haven police department. He retired from New Haven police department in 2010 after 22 years. Reichard will make $100,500 annually.

Mayoral assistant Zak Leavy said Tuesday that "there was no ceremony or pomp-and-circumstance. He was sworn in in Mayor Finizio's office in front of Chief (Margaret) Ackley, myself and CAO (Jane) Glover."

Leavy said a photograph from the swearing-in was posted Monday afternoon on the mayor's Facebook page.

Todd Lynch, the police union president, said he had yet to meet the new administrator.

"We'll take whatever positive leadership we can get," Lynch said. "In the union's opinion, leadership has been lacking. That's a given."
