Student loans path to American dream

I am writing in response to the May 15 letter, "Not taxpayer job to pay others' tuition," because I am shocked by how drastically out of touch the writer is with the reality of the costs of higher education. Without student loans, many would be forced to choose between higher education and providing for their families.
With two educators as parents, and three younger teenage brothers who could probably eat their way through an entire grocery store, do I look like I can afford the $26,000 University of Connecticut tuition out of pocket?
So, why go if I can't afford it, right? Because for me, college is the gateway to the American dream, and student loans keep that gateway open to middle-class families like mine. The "idiots," who the author describes as participating in a "meaningless and irrelevant" education are actually the future skilled workers that will shape our country.
Congressmen Joe Courtney genuinely understands the importance of making college a possibility for all those who dream of it by protecting affordable student loans. He knows, as I know, that our skilled, trained, and motivated workforce is what makes our nation strong.
Invest in college students and invest in the future.
